Professional Preparation and Self Reflection
When I first started at West Virginia State University, I was not sure if teaching was the right profession for me. I started out as a k-6 major, and after taking several classes I quickly realized that I wanted to be a health and physical education teacher. I have grown in so many different areas during my time at West Virginia State University not only as a student but as a person. I have learned a wide variety of strategies and techniques to use in my classroom, I have been pushed to my full potential, and I am more confident than ever before. I have selected two major areas that I have grown in during my time at WVSU.
My first artifact is the very first lesson plan that I created. It took me weeks to write it! When I finished the lesson plan I thought it was great, and I taught it to a sixth grade class. It didn't take me long to figure out that I had created a unit instead of a 45 minute lesson plan. I was very stressed out at the time, but when I look back on it now I laugh. I had way to many objectives, and I didn't focus it on one topic. Luckily, I was able to teach it three times in the same day, and by the third class I knew what I was doing wrong.
My second artifact is a recent lesson plan I created. The lesson involves multiple forms of differentiation, 21st century technology, and data based decision making. Compared to my first lesson, this is much more thought out and shows major progression in all aspects of the lesson. Now when I develop a lesson plan I understand that it should only focus on one topic at a time, and that I should use reliable resources to help me along the process.
My third artifact is my G.P.A from the beginning of the education program. My GPA was a 2.25, and it is obvious that I wasn't trying or doing my best. I didn't have a clue what I wanted to become, and I didn't take it seriously. During this time I didn't believe in myself, and I felt that it was hopeless to even try. However, after that semester I changed. The education program at West Virginia State University pushed me, engaged me, and showed me that I can do it!
My fourth artifact is my current GPA, along with my dean's list certificate from the 2015 fall semester. My current GPA is a 3.30, and now I know education is the upmost important, and it's not hopeless to have a dream! I want to be a teacher, I can do it, I will always give my best, and push myself to do better. I want to take what I have learned to encourage, push, and engage my students. I want to show them they can do it too!
